Effectively communicating with clients goes a long way toward making them happy clients. SEO is often a large departure from a client's day-to-day business and in many cases feels like a “necessary evil.” They don’t truly understand how it works but know they need it for their business to thrive.

Don’t Use Jargon
While phrases like SERPs, 301’s and domain authority are part of your everyday vocabulary, these phrases mean nothing to your clients. Go the extra mile to explain your tactics without overuse of jargon. Take the time to educate your clients and make your work feel more accessible to them.
We often (maybe too often) describe SEO as the marathon of search marketing, while tactics such as Google Ads provide fast results and therefore act as the sprint. There are no magic buttons that a developer missed when building your site. SEO is a process, a process that takes time.
If a client thinks that they are going to go from page 10 to the top of page 1 in the first month, they are going to be disappointed. Also, keep in mind that communication is as much about what you don’t say as what you do say. If you are not clear about expectations, you are leaving the client to fill in the blanks.

Understand Their Business & Goals
When you understand your clients’ goals you are speaking their language. The more you understand the ins and outs of their business, the more trust you gain. What does their day to day world look like? What does success look like to them? What metrics matter most?
Clearly verbalize your knowledge of the way your clients business works and what their goals are. This will allow them to know that you are seeing eye to eye.
Send a Monthly Report
Every month send each of your clients a report that includes results and updates on completed work. Make the connection between your actions and results, and how these results relate to their goals. If results are not positive, explain the reasons why. What are you doing to move the needle in the right direction in the coming months? They probably want to know.
Communication is a two-way street. Ask them what you could be doing better? When clients feel that they can share their opinion, it helps keep the channels of communication open.
Honing your communication skills will make your business run smoother and grow faster. As you communicate more with your clients you build trust, which leads to longer and more profitable relationships.
